Ferry crossing with children: the family guide
Taking the ferry with children can be a wonderful adventure. Here are our tips for a smooth crossing to the Îles du Ponant with the family.
Child fares: what to expect
All ferry companies offer reduced fares for children, typically for ages 4 to 12. Under-4s usually travel free. Discounts range from 30% to 50% off the adult fare depending on the company. Some operators also offer family packages — check each company's page for details.
Choosing the right crossing for kids
For families with young children, shorter crossings are often best. Our top recommendations:
- Île aux Moines — just 5 minutes from Baden, perfect for a day trip with toddlers
- Île de Bréhat — 10 minutes from l'Arcouest, gentle and scenic
- Île de Batz — 15 minutes from Roscoff, with an exotic garden kids love
- Île d'Aix — 20 minutes from Fouras, car-free and flat for pushchairs
For longer crossings (Ouessant at 75-150 min, Yeu at 70 min), plan snacks, games and consider anti-seasickness precautions.
Seasickness prevention
The Atlantic can be choppy, especially on the Iroise Sea routes (Ouessant, Molène, Sein). Tips:
- Stay on deck in the fresh air rather than inside
- Focus on the horizon
- Avoid heavy meals before departure
- Consider children's motion sickness bands or medication (consult your pharmacist)
Family-friendly islands
Belle-Île-en-Mer is the most family-complete island: sandy beaches, ice cream shops, bike hire and enough space to explore for several days. Île de Groix is another great choice with its famous convex beach and quieter atmosphere. For a quick half-day escape, Île aux Moines or Île d'Arz in the Gulf of Morbihan are ideal — calm waters, short crossing, and easy walking paths.
