Summer 2026 crossings: our booking tips
Summer is coming and ferry seats to the islands fill up fast. Here are our tips for booking at the right time and avoiding unpleasant surprises.
Book early for the most popular islands
For the most popular destinations — Belle-Île-en-Mer, Île de Groix and Ouessant — we strongly recommend booking your crossing at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance during July and August. Vehicle transport to Belle-Île and Groix books up particularly fast: slots can sell out several weeks ahead.
When do high season rates apply?
Most ferry companies switch to high season pricing from 1 July to 30 September, with some extending to include May bank holidays and the June school holiday weekends. The price difference between low and high season can be significant — sometimes up to 50% more on peak routes.
Tip: if your dates are flexible, travelling in the first two weeks of July or the last two weeks of September often offers the best of both worlds — good weather, fewer crowds, and sometimes mid-season pricing.
Vehicles and bikes: what you need to know
Only three islands accept vehicles: Belle-Île-en-Mer (via Compagnie Océane from Quiberon), Île de Groix (from Lorient) and Île d'Yeu (via Yeu Continent from Fromentine). On all other islands, cars are not allowed — and that's part of their charm.
Bikes are accepted on most crossings for a small supplement (€4 to €18). Many islands are perfect for cycling, especially Bréhat, Batz, Arz and Île aux Moines.
What if the crossing is cancelled?
Weather cancellations do happen, particularly on exposed routes like Ouessant, Molène and Île de Sein. Companies will either rebook you on the next available crossing or offer a full refund. Check each company's cancellation policy before travelling.
Our summer 2026 top picks
For a first island experience, we recommend Belle-Île-en-Mer for its variety (beaches, cliffs, villages) or Île de Bréhat for a quick, easy day trip (10 minutes from the mainland). For something wilder and more remote, Ouessant or Île de Sein offer an unforgettable Atlantic experience.
