Belle-Île-en-Mer

The largest Breton island, Belle-Île captivates with its dramatic cliffs, Vauban citadel and sandy beaches bordered by wild moorlands.

A majestic island off the coast of Morbihan

Belle-Île-en-Mer, aptly nicknamed "the well-named", is the largest of the Breton islands with 85 km² of breathtaking landscapes. Located 14 kilometres off the Quiberon peninsula, it offers the very best of Brittany in one place: jagged cliffs battered by the Atlantic, lush green valleys sheltered from the wind, and fine sandy beaches with turquoise waters.

A remarkable historical heritage

The island is dominated by the Vauban citadel overlooking the port of Le Palais, a testament to Belle-Île's strategic importance through the centuries. Coveted in turn by the English, the Dutch and the Spanish, the island was fortified by the famous military architect in the 17th century. The port of Le Palais, with its colourful houses and lively quays, is the main point of entry and the vibrant heart of the island.

Landscapes that inspired artists

The Côte Sauvage, on the western side, unfolds spectacular cliffs sculpted by erosion. The Aiguilles de Port-Coton, immortalised by Claude Monet during his stays in 1886, remain one of the most photographed sites in Brittany. Sarah Bernhardt owned a fort at the Pointe des Poulains, which she transformed into a residence.

Four villages, a thousand discoveries

The island is divided among four communes — Le Palais, Sauzon, Bangor and Locmaria — each with its own character. Sauzon, with its pastel-coloured fishing port, is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Brittany. Locmaria is home to the most unspoilt beaches, while Bangor offers the wildest ocean panoramas.

Practical information

Belle-Île is accessible year-round from Quiberon with Compagnie Océane (45-minute crossing). In summer, additional services run from Vannes, Port-Navalo and La Turballe. The island has a bus network, but cycling remains the ideal way to explore its 100 km of coastal paths. Accommodation, restaurants and shops are plentiful enough for a stay of several days.
