Île de Houat
A small car-free paradise in Morbihan, Houat offers immaculate white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and perfectly preserved wild nature.
A pristine jewel between land and sea
Île de Houat — "the duck" in Breton — is a small paradise of 2.9 km² situated between the Quiberon peninsula and Belle-Île-en-Mer. Five kilometres long and barely 1.3 km wide, it stretches like a crescent of land bordered by fine sandy beaches with translucent waters. With its 250 permanent residents, Houat retains an end-of-the-world atmosphere that day visitors can only glimpse.
Beaches worthy of the tropics
The large beach of Treac'h er Goured, on the eastern coast, is regularly ranked among the finest beaches in France. Its white sand, preserved dunes and shallow turquoise waters make it an ideal swimming spot for families. On the western coast, the more secluded beaches of Treac'h er Salus and Treac'h er Béniguet offer sheltered coves accessible by footpaths.
A car-free island
Houat is strictly off-limits to motorised vehicles (except fishermen's tractors). This feature, far from being a constraint, is its greatest asset. The island can be walked in half a day along the coastal path. The silence, barely broken by the surf and the cries of seagulls, is a luxury that has become rare on the French coast.
An authentic fishing village
The village of Houat, clustered around the church of Saint-Gildas, is an old-fashioned fishing village. White houses with colourful shutters line narrow lanes. Life revolves around the port of Saint-Gildas, where lobster pots and nets are reminders that fishing remains an essential activity. A fort, built under Napoleon III, overlooks the port.
Practical information
Houat is served by Compagnie Océane from Quiberon (40 minutes) year-round, with reduced frequency in winter. In summer, Navix offers excursions from Vannes and Port-Navalo. Accommodation is limited to a few holiday rentals and guesthouses — booking is essential in season. Two restaurants and a grocery shop provide catering. Bring water and a picnic if you plan to go walking.
