Île d'Arz

Known as 'the captains' island', Île d'Arz offers an enchanting coastal walk in the Gulf of Morbihan, past a tidal mill and sheltered beaches.

The captains' island at the heart of the gulf

Île d'Arz, nicknamed "the captains' island" after the many naval officers born there, is one of the two main islands in the Gulf of Morbihan. With 2.7 km² of land surrounded by the calm waters of the gulf, it offers a peaceful and unspoilt setting, just 15 minutes by boat from Vannes or Séné.

The Berno tidal mill

The Berno tidal mill, dating from the 16th century, is one of the island's most iconic landmarks. Restored in the 1990s, it is one of the few tidal mills still in operation in France. Its principle is simple yet ingenious: seawater fills a retention basin at high tide, then powers the wheel as it drains at low tide. The site is wonderfully photogenic with its stone dyke and marine pond.

A coastal path of great beauty

Walking around the island along the coastal path is the must-do activity. Approximately 12 kilometres long, it takes three to four hours and offers a succession of gentle landscapes: fine sand beaches, rocky headlands, salt marshes, salt meadows and small pine woods. The views over the gulf, its islets and the mainland are constantly renewed.

A living maritime heritage

Île d'Arz gave the French navy many officers and deep-sea captains, hence its nickname. This maritime tradition remains alive with a traditional boatyard and an active sailing community. The village, with its 12th-century church and granite houses, retains an authentic charm. The Prieuré de la Nourrice, founded by monks in the Middle Ages, attests to the long history of human settlement.
