Molène

A tiny island in the Iroise Sea and UNESCO biosphere reserve, Molène offers rare authenticity and a stunningly wild archipelago.

A speck of land in the Iroise Sea

Molène — Molenez in Breton, meaning "the bald island" — is a tiny world of 0.75 km² nestled between Ouessant and the mainland, in the heart of the Iroise Sea. With just 150 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest communes in France, yet also one of the most endearing. The Molène archipelago, comprising around twenty islets, is classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is part of the Iroise Marine Natural Park.

A village frozen in time

The village of Molène consists of a few narrow streets lined with low houses with blue shutters, huddled together to withstand the storms. There are no cars and no paved roads, just paths winding between gardens sheltered by stone walls. The island lives to the rhythm of the tides and the seasons, with a simplicity that appeals to visitors seeking authenticity.

An exceptional natural heritage

The Molène archipelago is home to one of the largest grey seal colonies in France. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the islets are a sanctuary for marine life: dolphins, sea otters and remarkable underwater biodiversity. The kelp forests encircling the archipelago are among the most extensive in Europe. At low tide, the landscape transforms dramatically, revealing vast rocky foreshores.

Practical information

Molène is served by Penn ar Bed (BreizhGo) from Brest (1h45) and Le Conquet (30 minutes). The island is a stop on the Brest-Ouessant route. Accommodation is limited — a few guesthouses and holiday rentals — and booking ahead in season is essential. A single restaurant and a small grocery shop provide supplies. The island can be visited on foot in half a day, but it deserves a longer stay to soak up the island rhythm.
