Île de Groix
An island with a unique geological heritage in Europe, Groix offers rare convex beaches, a rich tuna fishing past and spectacular coastal paths.
A unique geological treasure in Europe
Île de Groix, just 45 minutes from Lorient, is a true open-air mineralogical museum. It is world-renowned among geologists for its blue glaucophane schists and garnets, remnants of a geological formation 400 million years old. The François Le Bail nature reserve, at the eastern tip, protects this exceptional heritage as well as the only convex beach in Europe, the Plage des Grands Sables.
A glorious tuna fishing past
From the mid-19th century until the 1940s, Groix was the leading tuna fishing port in France. The Groix dundees — two-masted sailing vessels — set out each summer to hunt white tuna off the Breton coast. The tuna is so emblematic that a fish serves as the weather vane on the church steeple. The Groix ecomuseum retraces this maritime saga with a remarkable collection.
Contrasting landscapes
The island presents two faces: the wild, rugged southern coast with its schist cliffs and hidden coves; and the gentler northern coast with sandy beaches and sheltered inlets. The coastal path (GR 34) circles the entire island over 25 kilometres, revealing ever-changing panoramas along headlands and shores. The Trou de l'Enfer, a spectacular sea chasm, is one of the most impressive sites.
A lively island all year round
With 2,300 permanent residents, Groix is one of the liveliest Ponant islands. The village, with its shops, bars and restaurants, remains vibrant even off-season. Port-Tudy, the arrival port, is a little gem with its colourful fishermen's houses and quay where trawlers sit alongside pleasure boats.
