Île d'Aix
A car-free island in Charente-Maritime, Île d'Aix is a Napoleonic gem offering stunning views of Fort Boyard and golden beaches.
Napoleon's island
Île d'Aix, a small crescent of land of 1.2 km² at the heart of the Pertuis d'Antioche, is inseparable from Napoleonic history. It was here that Napoleon I spent his last days on French soil in July 1815, before surrendering to the British and departing for exile on Saint Helena. The house where he stayed is now the Napoleon Museum, housing a rich collection of memorabilia, furniture and personal objects of the Emperor.
Fort Boyard as a backdrop
From the beaches and ramparts of Île d'Aix, the view of Fort Boyard is striking. This maritime fortress, built in the 19th century to protect the Rochefort arsenal, became world-famous through the eponymous television game show. The island offers the best vantage point to admire this iconic monument, especially at sunset when the fort is silhouetted against the horizon.
A car-free island with unique charm
Île d'Aix is closed to cars. Getting around is done on foot, by bicycle or by horse-drawn carriage. This tranquillity creates a timeless atmosphere. The village, fortified by Vauban with its cobbled lanes, low houses draped in hollyhocks and Romanesque church, has a timeless charm. The ramparts, casemates and cannon batteries recall the island's strategic importance for the defence of the Charente estuary.
Beaches and nature
Île d'Aix offers several pleasant beaches, including the Plage de la Rade on the eastern coast and the Plage de Tridoux to the south. The coastal path completes the full circuit in about an hour and a half. The Pointe Sainte-Catherine, at the southern tip, offers panoramic views over Île d'Oléron, Île de Ré and Fort Énet. The African Museum, a local curiosity, presents a collection of African wildlife brought back by Baron Gourgaud.
